If you’re the caregiver for your parent (or parents), you know what a huge responsibility it is. There are many pitfalls to avoid while meeting this responsibility, so don’t make the following errors when fulfilling such an important mission.
Not seeing the big picture
Being a caregiver isn’t just about getting the little details right. It’s important to understand what’s going on with your parent overall, including their cognitive ability and health issues. Getting a complete evaluation by a physician who specializes in geriatrics will allow you to see what you’re really up against.
Not planning for the future
Don’t just wait until an emergency, disaster or health-related crisis strikes your parent. Many of these situations can be avoided with careful planning. For instance, if they’re currently living at home, see what their needs will be in five or 10 years, and if residing there will be safe in the future.
Not consulting with your parent
Remember, it’s still your parent’s life, and unless they’ve been deemed legally incompetent by the courts, they have the right to make their own decisions. You may not always agree with them, but it’s crucial that your loved one have a feeling of control over their own destiny.
As always, remember you don’t have to go it alone. Lean on your community for support and give yourself some grace. You deserve it!
