The chance for heat stroke due to overexposure significantly increases in the summer months, when temperatures soar. While it is important to get outside and stay active in summer, here are some tips to avoid a deadly heat stroke:
Wear light-colored clothing. Dark colored, tight-fitting clothing absorbs heat and traps sweat. Instead, pick loose, light-colored clothing to ensure your body can cool off.
Invest in a wide brimmed hat. It is important to always protect your face when immersed in intense sunlight. You will avoid a nasty sunburn and look fashionable while doing it!
Water, water water. When leaving the house, always bring a jug of water. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink; hydrate throughout the day.
Get the air conditioner pumping. An adequate cooling system is essential after a long day in the sun. If possible, buy a few fans to scatter throughout the house.
Find an alternative. If possible, find an alternative to going outside if the weather is unseasonably warm. Other alternatives include going to a movie or shopping at an indoor mall.
Recreate earlier in the morning. Completing outdoor activities before the sun is at full blast (before 10 a.m.) is the smartest solution if you must go outside on hot days. Just don’t forget to bring sunscreen, water and snacks!
