1. Panama. An average retired couple could live modestly in Panama City for roughly $2,000, including rent, utilities, insurance and groceries. Currently, more than 21,000 U.S. retirees receive Social Security in Central America and the Caribbean.
2. Thailand. Beautiful weather and a low cost of living make Thailand a great place to leave the stresses of work behind. Just ask Barry, a Canadian who moved to Chiang Mai in 2009 and “lives like a king” for under $2,000 per month. Modern medical care, affordable restaurants and an active expat club are some other reasons more than 30,000 expats call this city home.
3. Ecuador. Seniors can really stretch their dollars here, with a doctor’s visit costing around $10 and a restaurant meal clocking in at $2.50. According to International Living, a couple can live well in Ecuador for $1,400 a month, including rent. Modern medical care and welcoming locals means you can enjoy the creature comforts of home while immersing yourselves in a brand-new community.
